The jury wished to honour “a project that particularly moved us with its poetry, for its delicate handling of a dark subject—universal, even if taboo—and for its humour. The creators explore the process of grief by having their young heroine converse with a psychologist cat we would all like to have at home in times of hardship. We were captivated by its distinctive black-and-white animation, as well as by the idea of a soundtrack that uses the drum kit to express emotions… We hope that this award will allow Ava and Tobi to come to life, and in doing so help us navigate our own oceans of tears…”
