May 1904.
A single photograph shakes a kingdom.
Behind the lens is Alice Seeley Harris, a young British missionary whose images exposed to the world the horrific violence committed in the Congo Free State, then the personal possession of King Leopold II.
Mutilations, forced labor, devastated villages: behind the exploitation of rubber lay a regime of terror that claimed the lives of nearly ten million Congolese people. Her photograph—followed by many others—sparked an international outcry that shook the Belgian monarchy. But who was the woman behind the camera?
Alice Seeley Harris was never destined to make history. She simply turned her photographs into a political weapon, becoming, almost despite herself, the world's first humanitarian whistleblower.
Our film follows in her footsteps, weaving together historical investigation and a deeply personal quest to tell the story of how a voice long consigned to the shadows helped change the course of history—and to explore what these images continue to reveal about the way we see the world today.
