Tchaïkovski, le chant du cygne

Written and directed by Jérôme Lambert & Philippe Picard

Synopsis

One hundred and fifty years ago, in 1877, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky attended the premiere of Swan Lake in Moscow — a work that would make him the most celebrated of Russian composers.
At the same time, the composer was going through one of the darkest episodes of his life. Tchaikovsky was homosexual, considered a disgrace in Tsarist Russia, and he attempted to take his own life by plunging into the Moskva River. This romantic and tormented figure of Tchaikovsky quickly fascinated artists and writers. Nina Berberova and Klaus Mann were among the first to reveal his homosexuality. In their books, they emphasized the importance of this cathartic moment in 1877.
From that point on, his music became more daring, and the composer produced one masterpiece after another. From Swan Lake to Symphony No. 6 'Pathétique', Tchaikovsky’s music expresses passionate love, death, and infinite desire. He would never find happiness in life, but he succeeded in sublimating through his art all that life had denied him.
