Matobo, the first African painters

Written and directed by Aurine Crémieu

Synopsis

On the high plateaus of Zimbabwe lies an immense territory that the Ndebele call Matobo, the "speaking stones." Millennia earlier, these lands were traversed by hunter-gatherers who, between the Middle Stone Age and the Later Stone Age, continually painted in their rock shelters. They depicted scenes of daily life, hunting, rituals, and the fauna that lived around them. These first African painters have left us one of the oldest examples of rock art in Southern Africa.
